Green has big day in A&M scrimmage

HUNTSVILLE, Al. - On Wednesday, quarterback Deaunte Mason carved up Alabama A&M's defense. On Saturday, it was running back Tony Green's turn.

Green, trying to fill the void left by the departure of all-time leading rusher Ulysses Banks, rushed for 89 yards on just eight carries and scored on a nifty 22-yard run as the first offense scored on three of its first four possessions against the first defense.

"A lot of credit goes to the offensive line," said Green, who accounted for 76 yards on four carries on A&M's first scoring drive of the scrimmage. "When you have a great offensive line with a lot of experience, it's hard not to have a good running game. Once we get past the first line, it's all on us."

Green got some help from backup tailback Kaderius Lacey, who finished with 51 yards on just two carries, including a 50-yard touchdown jaunt. The two combined for 160 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns.

"We're going to have a very exciting offense," Green said. "We're just waiting to showcase it."

Mason found Rashad Johnson with a 40-yard touchdown pass to cap a four-play, 59-yard drive. With Mason under center, the first offense scored on three straight possessions after going three-and-out to start the scrimmage.

"In the last scrimmage, we showed we could pass the ball," said Mason, who 4-of-8 for 80 yards and a touchdown. "This scrimmage, we ran the ball a lot. The offensive line did a great job. The running backs hit the holes and made some big runs.

"I think it shows how diverse we are as a team. If somebody stops the pass, we can come out running the ball and vice versa."

A&M coach Anthony Jones was pleased with his first offense.

"We've been pretty sharp," he said. "After the first series, we scored 21 points in 18 plays. That's pretty good work by your offense, but it's not how you want your defense to start a game.

"Defensively, we've look sharp against our second and third units, but we need to do that consistently against a top-tier quarterback."

After the offense scored on three of its first four possessions, the defense settled down and allowed just a field goal over the last 11 possessions of the scrimmage.

Defensive coordinator Brawnski Towns, pleased with how his unit responded after some early struggles, was disappointed with the lack of intensity early on, especially with Mason at quarterback.

"We need to play with more intensity to start the game," he said. "We played well the first series, but after that we let them score three straight touchdowns. We started playing a little better after that, but the damage had already been done.

"We slowed Deaunte down a couple of times and ended up forcing a couple of punts, but we still didn't play as well as we need to against a quarterback of that caliber."
