Fan Day Scrimmage an Offensive Showcase

NORMAL – The Alabama A&M first-team offense and defense squared off against the second-team offense and defense in the 2010 fan day scrimmage.  Each of the series in today’s scrimmage continued until the defense came up with a stop or the offense scored.

Quarterback Deanute Mason threw two touchdowns while running back Tony Green added one of his own to give the first-team offense 21 points.  The second-team defense seemed over matched but was not without their own big plays as defensive lineman Clarence Lovell picked up the first fumble of the game on the second play of the ninth series and took it 55 yards for the second-teams first points of the day.

Led by Mason and Green the White first-team offense drove the ball down the field with ease picking up two first downs en route. On the sixth play of the 13th series wide receiver Quinton Carlock’s reception was knocked loose and picked up by St. Louis, Missouri native Douglass Anderson for the second-team’s defense second turnover of the day.  With the Maroon defense celebrating their second turnover the offense wasn’t having the same luck as they lined up to begin the 14th series, they were whistled for illegal substitution, 12 men in the huddle.  On the very next play the White defense recorded their first turnover with an interception by senior Chris Faush.

From then both offensives sputtered as more backups saw playing time.  Both teams had big plays or hits on the day beginning with Carlock’s reception off the hands of Jeremy Isabel.  Then there was Lovell’s 55-yard fumble return for a touchdown.  Running back Kaderius Lacy showed some grit in today’s scrimmage with a 25 hard earned run in which he broke three tackles, spinning, out running, and stiff arming the defense.  The final highlight came after the second pick, this one by starting free safety Rico Porch.  During the play Porch was looking for the endzone after the pick when tight end Kenneth Harris, who was in Maroon, pancaked a defensive lineman trying to clear a path.  The last three series all ended with interceptions before thunder and lightning ended the day.

There is only 14 days left before the Maroon & White’s 2010 season opener versus Tennessee State at LP field in the John Merritt Classic.  Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the A&M ticket office at 256-372-4700.
