NORMAL – The first weekend in September was a busy one for the Alabama A&M athletics teams as all five fall sports were in action.
The Lady Bulldogs soccer team fell 4-0 to Middle Tennessee State University in their home opener on Friday, September 3rd. The current SWAC defensive player of the Week, Celeste Roberts, has recorded the lone goal. Their next contest is scheduled for Tuesday, September 7th versus Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia.
The three-time defending SWAC champion A&M volleyball team picked up their first two victories of the year in the Jaguar Classic Invitational hosted by the University of South Alabama. A&M fell 3-2 to Southeastern Louisiana in their first contest in Mobile before rebounding with a win over South Alabama three games to one. The Bulldogs was paced offensively by Clarissa Moore’s 14 kills. Amie Goodwin recorded 10 kills while Rose Corneille had a match-high 21 digs. On Saturday, September 4th the Maroon & White needed all five games against UNC-Asheville before coming away with their second W of the year. Karensa Beckford finished with 18 kills while Goodwin and Moore each came away with 17. Once again Corneille led the way defensively with 20 digs to help the Bulldogs come out of Mobile, Alabama 2-1. Moore and Beckford were named to the All-Tournament team. The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Tuesday, September 7th to take on the Crimson Tide at 7 pm.
In men’s soccer action A&M fell to the University of California-Riverside 5-0 in their first contest in the UNLV Nike Invitational. Their next chance to pick up the first win of 2010 will be Sunday, September 6th when they play tournament host the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
The Maroon & White cross country team participated in their first meet of the season in the Troy University Invitational. Shaquina Phalo finished 22nd with a time of 13:39.6 while Takaunia Carstarphen came in 27th with a time of 13:50.2. As a team the Lady Bulldogs finished 7th with a total time of 1:12:30.0 averaging 14:30.1. The cross-country squad is scheduled for the Fleet Sports Earl Jacoby Memorial hosted by the University of Alabama at Huntsville in the Sharon Johnston Park. The event is set for Saturday, September 18th at 8:30 am.
