White jumps all over Maroon to claim 2012 spring game

NORMAL – With the offense in White and defense in Maroon for the annual 2012 Spring football game the offense had its way outscoring the defense 35-18 in Louis Crews stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The defense could have earn points by turnovers, three-and-outs and defensive touchdowns but didn’t do enough to hold down the number five offense in the SWAC in 2011.

"It's kind of what I expected," head coach Anthony Jones said. "I wanted to see it competitive. One of the things we want to do as an offense is take care of the football. We had two turnovers; we've got to work on that. But we were able to develop a little bit of a vertical passing game. And we were able to even out the scoring.

"Defensively we have some work to do. You just want to have a competitive scrimmage and I thought we had that today."

Three year starting QB, Deaunte Mason, got the first nod under center going 6-of-12 for 50 yards and a 14-yard touchdown pass to G'Alonzo Milton.

Second string quarterback David Isabelle finished 6-of-9 for 107 yards and two touchdowns, a 14-yarder to Montarius Smith and a 3-yarder to Reshaad DeJarnett.  Isabelle however did throw the game’s first interception.

California native Chris Leachman was next and had the game’s biggest play completing a 55-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Pride.

Red-shirt freshman Brandon Wells rounded out the quarterback play directing an eight-play, 70-yard drive capped off by Talmadge McCloud's 1-yard run.

Runningback Kaderius Lacey rushed the ball nine times and recorded 20 yards while Brendon Johnson totaled 37 yards on 10 carries. Terrell Badie also saw time in the backfield earning 13 yards on seven carries.

Long-time defensive coordinator Brawnski Towns named red-shirt linebacker Germaine Calmes the defensive most valuable player.  The Matteson, Ill. Native forced a fumble and collected three tackles. Over three different Bulldogs accounted for a sack.  Nicholas Shoaf intercepted a pass.

"I thought overall we didn't come out aggressively at all. We gave up too many big plays to the offense, especially our pass defense," Towns mentioned. "We've got to do a better job with our pass defense. We gave up five touchdowns and that's unacceptable for us.

The stars were out at halftime, as former A&M standout Robert Mathis, had his No. 55 collegiate jersey retired.

"I appreciate everything everyone has done," Mathis said.

Councilman Richard Showers presented Robert with a plague on behalf of District 1 while AAMU athletics board chairman Chris Robinson presented Mathis’s fiancé and mother with a bouquet of roses.  Coach Jones then awarded Robert with his jersey mounted for his collection while holding on to a copy to hang in the George Hobson field house.
