Bulldog Football recognized for APR scores

NORMAL  – Alabama A&M football continues to earn victories this time in the classroom as the Bulldogs were recognized by the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) for their Academic Progress Rate (APR) Award.

The APR Award recognizes one institution at each of the 14 FCS conferences that has the highest APR score. In addition, the Association also recognizes one institution from each conference that has improved the most from the previous year. In all, 29 awards will be given this year, due to a tie in the Ivy League for the highest APR score in 2010-11.

“I along with the assistant coaches and the academic enhancement team work extremely hard at keeping the student-athletes advancing academically,” head football coach Anthony Jones mentioned.  “We recruit athletes to not only play football but to grow and development into substantial contributors to society.”

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member colleges and universities adopted a comprehensive academic reform package designed to improve the academic success and graduation of all student-athletes. The centerpiece of the package is the academic measurement for teams, known as the APR.

“Anytime you can lead the conference in any area that’s an honor,” Jones said.  “This is a heck of an honor for the entire team.   I would like to say congratulations to the players for their hardwork and dedication to themselves and Alabama A&M.”

"I am extremely pleased with the men's football team for the highest Football APR score in the conference," said AAMU Director of Athletics Bryan Hicks.  "We will continue to place academics first with all of our coaches and student-athletes by having the expectation of continual improvement in all areas of academic achievement."

The following institutions will receive their awards during the FCS ADA Luncheon sponsored by UPS, on Monday, June 25 in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Convention at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas.
