Day 1: Alabama A&M Football Preseason Camp

NORMAL – They’ve met with the coaches, academic affairs personnel and compliance officers but now it was time to hit the field as the Alabama A&M football team opened their first practice of the 2012 preseason camp.

With the ora of the late Ben Blacknall in the air the coaches and players, who were in helmets and shorts, hit the A&M practice field with over 100 fans watching from a distance.

“The tempo of the practice felt good the guys were ready to play,” said 11th year head coach Anthony Jones. “We pointed out the little things as well as the big things in every aspect of practice.  We wanted to set the tone this evening as every practice is an opportunity to get a little better.”

Some of the events that took place were 7-on-7 drills and individual work.  The Bulldogs will have two more days of shorts and helmets practice before adding shoulder pads on Friday and Saturday.

All throughout the evening you heard guys mentioning the little things especially the championship game referencing the 2011 SWAC championship contest that A&M lost 16-15.

Those little things were the way the offensive linemen held their hands to quarterbacks throwing the ball in a tight spiral.  Throughout the first day the players were loose and the atmosphere was energetic.

During seven on seven drills a little aggressive touching started happening as the young men showed their enthusiasm to be on the field.

From 34 year veteran at defensive coordinator Brawnski Towns yelled at his defensive unit to 11th year offensive coordinator Cedric Pearl righting the offensive line, to coach Jones smiling when he ran onto the field for his first fall practice of 2012.  Excitement was even seen in the media coverage to the athletic trainers setting up water stands under the 90 degree heat.

Football on “The Hill” is back for its 102nd year and everyone is ready for it.
