Marshall named to SBN Sports Black College All-American

NORMAL – Alabama A&M's Vernon Marshall was recently selected to the Sheridan Sports Network All-American team.

If anyone epitomizes the term student-athlete, it's Vernon Marshall.

Majoring in elementary education, he holds a 3.7 grade point average, the highest on the Bulldogs' football team, and is set to graduate on schedule this spring with the Bulldogs Class of 2013.

He's a two-time All-Southwestern Athletic Conference choice and was an integral part of Bulldogs' team which made history with a 6-0 start, earning the school's FCS Top 25 poll before finishing 7-4.

He finished the season second win the SWAC with 101 tackles, including 47 solos, 54 assists and two sacks.

"He is deserving of this award because he is an excellent student-athlete," head coach Anthony Jones said.  "He does the right things to get better on and off the field as it shows with his GPA and stats.  He is the kind of kid every coach wants on their team."

"Congratulations to Vernon," Jones continued.

The 2012 SBN All-American Team is led by eleven players from Winston-Salem State, Tennessee State and Alabama State, respectively. The TSU Tigers and WSSU Rams each had four members of their respective squads selected to the team. Individually, Winston-Salem State University quarterback Kameron Smith is the “SBN Sports Doug Williams Offensive Player of the Year,” University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff defensive lineman Brandon Thurmond is the “SBN Sports Mel Blount Defensive Player of the Year” and Winston-Salem State University Head Coach Connell Maynor is the “SBN Sports Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year.”

The SBN Black College All-American Awards (BCAA) recognizes and celebrates the academic and athletic achievements of student athletes who play football at America's Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
