A&M football opens spring drills

NORMAL – Head coach Anthony Jones opened his 12th spring drills on “The Hill” Friday, Feb. 22nd with 67 players donning the Maroon & White.

Jones enters the 2013 edition of spring football looking for a starting quarterback for the first time in five years.  He also has to replace key starters including all-time leading rusher Kaderius Lacey.

“We have a lot of guys we have to replace on both sides of the ball,” said Jones.

“The wide receivers are our deepest position on the field and has the most experience,” Jones continued.  “On the defensive side we have some players on the line and in the secondary that should lead us in those areas.”

They were a lot of new faces who are looking for time on the field as Jones has stated numerous times, “every position is open.”

The team started drills with warm-ups then went straight into special teams.  From there the players went into their individual drills refreshing skill sets for their position.  The next drill was the coveted seven-on-seven sequence which the secondary and linebackers lined up against the wide receivers looking for turnovers as the quarterbacks took turns throwing pass routes.  Of the 36 plays ran 28 passes were completed.

“We threw a lot at them today to see how they would react and see where they are mentally,”

“We are working to get better each and every day we’re at practice,” Jones mentioned.  “We are running an accelerated version of spring ball.  We really need to see where the players are athletically and mentally.”

A lot of questions will have to be answered as the Bulldogs continue spring practice.  They will hit the field from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23rd and start-up at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24th.
