Normal- The Maroon and White track squads are off to a good start in the new year after completing the Ed Temple Classic in Nashville, Tennessee.
At the annual classic hosted by Tennessee State University, the Bulldogs put on a good display recording numerous top 20 finishes. On the women's side, the best performances of the day came from Marion Epperson in the field events of weight throw and shot put. Epperson took sixth and seventh, with distances of 11.67 and 11.02 meters respectively. Another stand out performance came from Destiny Thurman who placed eighth overall in the high jump with a mark of 1.48 meters.
The men fared slightly better in this year opening event, recording four top five finishes on the day. Maurice Jones placed fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.83 meters, while Galvin Burks recorded the only first place finish for A&M in the men's weight throw. Burks threw for a distance of 13.89 meters. Leading the way on the track for the men was newcomer Algernon Watkins and veteran Donte' McDaniel. Both took third place finishes in their events, the 55-meter dash, and 55-meter hurdles.
Overall, the Maroon and White started the 2014 year off on a good note, getting right into the action and excelling in individual events. The teams will look to increase their victories when they return to competition on January 10, in Birmingham, Ala.
