Bulldogs lose heartbreaker to Prairie View A&M on Senior Day

NORMAL – There were emotions before the game on Senior Day, during the game and there was a lot of emotion after the game as the Bulldogs fell 13 yards short in a 38-35 loss to Prairie View A&M.

Senior quarterback Jaymason Lee, who was playing with a torn anterior collateral ligament in his knee, was 24 of 47 for 430 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

His pass to Tevin McKenzie to the Prairie View A&M 13-yard line was the final play as the clock ran out.

Senior Montaurius Smith had 177 yards in receiving, giving him 997 yards for the year.

Smith, the Bulldogs' all-time reception leader with 217 catches, also scored a touchdown in his final appearance Saturday at Louis Crews Stadium.

"I felt bad for the seniors," said Head Coach James Spady. "For players like Jaymason, who is playing on one leg and giving everything he has for his brothers.

"And for Montaurius, who is hobbled too."

Before the game, the Bulldogs honored their seniors: Lee, Smith, A.J. Clark, Jaymason Lee, Chris Leachman, Marcus Dozier, Ja'mel Morris, Jawanza Vickers, Alan Cruz, Winston Hunt and Derrick Square.

It was an emotional rollercoaster ride in the final as the Bulldogs rallied to take a 35-31 lead when Lee found Octayvius Miles for a 46-yard over-the-shoulder touchdown catch with 1:08 left on the clock.

And the high turned into a valley when the Panthers marched down the field for a touchdown and a 38-35 lead with 21 seconds left, setting up the Bulldogs' last-gasp chance.

Offensively, the Bulldogs piled up 627 yards in total offense and Prairie View A&M had 453 yards.

Harvey Harris rushed for 100 yards on 19 carries for Alabama A&M and a touchdown. Ceasar Ramon Diaz had three field goals and Brandon Eldemire had a 1-yard touchdown run.

The Bulldogs (4-7 overall, 3-5 SWAC) wrap up the regular season next Saturday at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
