BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The SWAC Digital Network will air its fourth match up of the season as Alabama A&M hosts Alcorn State in a men and women's basketball double-header on Monday, February 24, inside the T.E. Elmore Gymnasium.
The women's game is set for 5:30 p.m. CST with the men's match-up to follow.
This women's game draws league attention. Head coaches Tonya Edwards (ALC) and Semeka Randall (AAMU) played for the all-time winningest coach in women's, Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee. Edwards helped lead Tennessee to its first two national championships in 1987 and 1989 and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 1987 Final Four. While at UT, Randall was a stand-out defensive player for the Lady Vols. She played a key role in Tennessee's 1998 NCAA Championship team that went 39-0, averaging 15.9 points a game and was recognized as an honorable mention All-American.
ALC (7-17, 6-7) has won six of their last eight games with five of those victories coming on the road. Tiero Frost leads the Lady Braves in scoring (18.8), assists, (1.5), and steals (1.8). She scored a career high 39 points at Grambling State two weeks ago.
The team notched its most impressive win a month prior when they handed Southern their first and only loss on the season.
AAMU (3-19,1-11) look to halt it's eight game losing streak. Their longest since last season's nine game skid.
Brittney Strickland currently leads the Lady Bulldogs in scoring, averaging 16.5 points per game while Jasmine Sanders is producing 13.0 ppg with a team high 7.2 boards per contest.
On the men's side, ALC (10-15,7-6) topped AAMU 70-64 in an overtime thriller at home. The combination of LeAntwan Luckett and Octavius Brown has turned out to be one of the best scoring duos in the league. Luckett averages 15.4 ppg and Brown is scoring 12.5 ppg.
The Bulldogs should be well rested from their seven-day layoff. Last week, AAMU (10-12, 7-5) ended Alabama State's three-game winning streak with an overtime victory on SDN.Â
Winners of four of their last five, AAMU finds themselves only one game out of second place in the conference standings. Â
Jeremy Crutcher posted a career high 27 points last Saturday and leads the Bulldogs in scoring (13.2), assists (3.2), and steals (1.3)
Robert Williamson will deliver the play-by-play during the live stream. Gaati Werema, will serve as color analyst for the women's game with former AAMU head coach Vann Pettaway stepping in to breakdown the men's contest.
