Spady: Players’ roles to be determined in two-a-days

BIRMINGHAM – Alabama A&M head football coach James Spady said several positions will be determined during two-a-days in just a couple of weeks.

The Bulldogs' coach made the comments during Friday's annual Southwestern Athletic Conference Media Day. He was accompanied by running back Harvey Harris and linebacker Bryan Brower.

A key outcome of the summer workouts will be at quarterback, he said, where there are four candidates vying for the starting role.

"Like last season, our quarterback will not have played a down at the Division I level," Spady said. "We've got four quarterbacks … we'll just throw the ball out there and let them play."

Spady did say that junior college De'Angelo Ballard has a slight lead over redshirt freshman Damion May, with freshman P.J. Garrett and redshirt freshman Cody Lui-Yuen also in the mix.

"The best athlete will be our starting quarterback and the No. 2 will play third down," he said.

On the Bulldogs' No.3 preseason ranking in the East Division – "We haven't done anything to earn that ranking. I thank them for the respect but we've got to play to earn the ranking."

On the program – "We have everything in place to have a championship level football team. We have to make sure we reflect well on our community and our university."
