For those that thought maybe this was the year Alabama A&M was ready to give up its stranglehold on the SWAC volleyball title, Monday night's 3-1 convincing victory over Mississippi Valley State may change your mind. The Bulldogs were dominant in nearly every aspect of the match and gave the Delta Devils their first conference loss. Brittney Sharp's 23 kills led and offensive attack that hit at a .395 clip for AAMU.
Along with Sharp, A&M had three other players with double figure kills. Shondrell Clarke had 15, Brittani Lewis had 14, and Laura Wilson had 11. Kara Jerden dished out 49 assists.
Ashley Robinson led MVSU with 22 kills. Jolene Brennan had 41 assists.
The win kept Mississippi Valley State from clinching the top seed from the SWAC's Eastern Division as the Devils fell to 18-9 overall and 5-1 in the league. Alabama A&M is now 5-14 and 3-1.
The win was the 599th career victory for Alabama A&M head coach Betty Austin.
