Student-Athlete Mental Health Services

Alabama A&M Athletics Mental Health Services (AMHS) is dedicated to the growth and development of student-athletes through providing the highest quality mental health care.

Alabama A&M Athletics prepares champions for life, and we know that champions are often faced with challenges. AMHS provides crisis intervention, counseling, consultation, outreach, and referral services to student-athletes who are seeking ways to better cope with and overcome life’s challenges.

Mental health professionals are available to meet with student-athletes to help them deal with a wide variety of issues that may arise during their collegiate experience. Student-athletes often meet with counselors to discuss a range of issues, including but not limited to the transition to college, coping with injuries, relationship difficulties (family, teammates, friends, romantic partner), stress, eating concerns, substance use, anxiety and depression. No issue is too small to seek services. Student-athletes are encouraged to schedule an appointment with Athletics Mental Health Services if the problems in life starts weighing them down.

Professional counselors are trained to help student-athletes identify and change ways of thinking or behaving that are potentially contributing to their distress or impairing their functioning.  The counselor will help the student-athlete develop problem solving, decision making and coping skills that will assist in adapting to or resolving life’s challenges. Counseling is also a place for student-athletes to discuss their personal concerns in a confidential and nonjudgmental setting.
