Head coach Vann Pettaway has said his team has underachieved for most of the conference season. It would seem, though, that his Bulldogs are peaking at the right time. Led by Obie Trotter's 20 points, another double-double from Joe Martin, and eight blocked shots from Mickell Gladness, Alabama A&M defeated Jackson State 72-62 to move up another rung in the league ladder.
The win was the fourth straight for A&M and moved them within striking distance of the number two seed in next week's SWAC Tournament. Southern has clinched the regular season title, but with a win Saturday against Grambling, the Bulldogs are assured of at least a three seed.
Martin finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Trotter added six assists to his 20 points. Michael Ford added 17 points playing for the first time in three games.
Alabama A&M opened up the game late in the first half scooting to a nine-point lead, 41-32. It was a lead the Bulldogs would hold the entire second half.
Now 12-12 on the season, A&M boosted its league record to 10-7.
