On a perfect April afternoon and in front of quite a few Bulldog fans, four seniors got to show their skills on campus for the final time. Willis Mbandi, Sammy Muriuki, Shingirayi Nyagura and Adande Piggott took center stage for their moments in the sun.
"Each time someone comes and goes, it just seems surreal," commented Bulldogs coach Thomas Colvin. "I've watch these guys come in and grow into responsible young men. It's tough to see them go, but in my heart, I know they're going to do well."
The day's match paired the Bulldogs against the Tigers of Tennessee State University. This would be the second match-up of the season against the Tigers, and the Bulldogs did not disappoint the home crowd.
The Bulldogs got off to a quick start by winning all three of the doubles matches. From there, the spotlight belonged to the seniors in singles.
Shingie Nyagura was first off the courts at #3 singles. Next, Willis Mbandi finished at #1, followed closely by Adande Piggott playing #4. Sammy Muriuki, nursing a sprained ankle, played doubles but was held out of singles play. The rest of the lineup was Arda Kaytan at #2, Lee James at #5 and Jamal Turner at #6. The Bulldogs managed to win all six of the singles matches and won overall 7-0.
"Record wise, this hasn't looked at good as previous years," Colvin said. "We've stepped up to a different level of tennis in this region and the opponents that we've played this year have been extremely tough. I'm happy about how this program has developed and it's because of the four seniors that we are where we are."
The Bulldogs will play their final match of the season on Tuesday, April 18 against West Alabama before heading to the SWAC Championship next weekend. The Bulldogs are seeded #2 in the East Division.
