Final Stats
Freshman Katrich Williams scored a career-high 21 points Thursday to lead Alabama A&M to a 56-51 victory over SWAC pre-season favorite Jackson State. Williams scored five straight points during a crucial stretch to push the A&M lead from 46-43 with 4:33 remaining to 51-43 at the 1:49 mark. The Bulldogs would ice the game from the free throw line and even their overall record at 6-6. AAMU remains unbeaten in conference play at 2-0.
The Bulldogs trailed 31-29 at the half, but held the Tigers to 25.9 percent from the floor in the second half and just 20 points. Alabama A&M opened the game with an 8-0 run, but Jackson State chipped away for the remainder of the first half before finally tying the game at 13 with 11:28 remaining. The two teams would battle back and forth for the rest of the half.
After JSU's first basket of the second half, neither team built more than a three-point lead until Williams' five-point run. Jackson State's chances of mounting a late comeback took a serious blow when all-SWAC performer Shelita Williams fouled out with 1:49 left. She finished the game with game-highs for the Tigers with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Katrich Williams was the only Bulldog in double figures. Crystal Malone added eight points, and Ashleonte' Samuel had seven points and eight rebounds. Rebekkah Barnes also chipped in with seven points.
