Rebekkah Barnes scored a game-high 21 points but it was Jolie Efezokhae who scored the last of her team-high 17 points on a layup with three seconds left to send Alabama A&M to a tough 72-70 defeat in its season opener against Jacksonville State.
Alabama A&M (0-1) overcame an eight-point, second half deficit. The Bulldogs battled all night. They last held the lead at the 5:55 mark on a Barnes layup, which made the score 61-60. There were also eight ties in the second half.
The Bulldogs started off strong, leading by as many as eight points in the first half. But Jacksonville State used a 28-10 run to open its biggest lead, 38-28, late in the first half.
Center Chaymieyon Moss scored 10 points and added four blocks for Alabama A&M, which plays next at Mississippi in Oxford, Miss., on Nov. 20.
