No. 8 UCLA Sweeps Past Alabama A&M in NCAA First Round

Clemson, S.C. - Alabama A&M's seventh berth into the NCAA Tournament in the last eight years came to an end Friday as No. 8 UCLA swept the Bulldogs 30-9, 30-14, 30-13 at Jervey Gymnasium on the Clemson University campus. The Bulldogs settled into the match and hung tough with the Bruins through much of the second and third games, holding a lead twice in game two.

"I am extremely proud of my team," said Alabama A&M head coach Nedra Brown, "I wish they could have enjoyed the match a little more, but UCLA is a great team."

Brittani Lewis compiled nine kills to lead the Bulldogs. Natalie Rodriguez handed out 20 assists and had five digs.  Rose Corneille led the Bulldogs with 11 digs.  CAssidy Brazelton had six kills for A&M.

After struggling with the pace and power of UCLA initially, A&M held its own after the first game.  The Bulldogs managed a positive hitting percentage in each of the final two games, despite finishing -.010 (22 kills, 23 errors, 98 attacks) for the match.

The Bruins hit .420 (47 kills, 10 errors, 88 attacks) and had 11 service aces to A&M's one by Corneille.

The loss ends Alabama A&M's season at 15-10. UCLA is 21-10 and will face the Clemson / Alabama winner Saturday in the second round.
