Lady Bulldogs On Track Against Alabama State

Feb. 17, 2007

The Lady Bulldogs rebounded after a loss at Lipscomb last week to get a 7-0 win against conference foe, Alabama State. Although the Ladies had not been able to spend much time on the courts the previous week, the sun in Montgomery seemed to charge their batteries. The Lady Bulldogs did not allow the Lady Hornets to get on track all afternoon.

"It was a good effort with some things happening for us that we'd not been able to do in the past," commented coach Thomas Colvin. "We wanted to see some things in this match so that we could focus on this week before going to the round-robin."

The Ladies of A&M were solid in doubles, something that has become a tradition on "the Hill". The Lady Hornets were only able to win a total of 6 games in the 3 doubles matches, giving A&M the doubles point.

In singles, the Lady Bulldogs were able to relax, loosen up and play their matches.

Shaniek Pinder was first off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #1 singles. The senior from the Bahamas got out early and never looked back.

Junior Charlene Tsangamwe got a 6-0, 6-4 win #2 singles, just ahead of doubles partner Batsirai Bvunzawabaya who won at #4, 6-1, 6-1.

Monique Jones was next off the court with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #5 singles.

2 new faces in the lineup, Me'Shala Johnson and Brittany Jelks, rounded out the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs and got their first wins as members of the Maroon. Johnson, a sophomore, won 7-5, 6-4 at #3 singles while Jelks, a freshman, spent a lot of time getting a 6-1, 6-2 win at #6.

"This was a team effort today. These ladies were supporting each other, as they have all year, up until the final match. That's what it takes, support, to get a solid win like we did today."
