Alabama A&M dug itself a deep hole Saturday hitting just 17 percent from the field in the first half, and Alabama State defeated the Bulldogs 73-55 at the Acadome. A&M managed just three field goals in the first period, and the Hornets built a 41-18 halftime lead. Alabama A&M got as close as 12 in the second half at 50-38 with just over 10 minutes remaining.
The Hornets outscored A&M 14-2 in the game's first seven-plus minutes and never looked back. The loss was the third straight for A&M, which falls to 4-11 overall and 1-4 in the SWAC. Alabama State improves to 8-7 and 4-1.
Evan Hilton scored a career high 21 points to lead A&M. Jonathan Belt had 11 off the bench. Mickell Gladness tallied 10 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.
Andrew Hayles led four players in double figures for the Hornets with 18. Brandon Brooks added 12, and Brandon Gordon and Richard Lott each had 11. Lott also grabbed 10 rebounds.
