April 14, 2008

Game 1 - MVSU 5, A&M 3
Game 2 - MVSU 12, A&M 3
Game 3 - MVSU 2, A&M 1 (9 inn.)

Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley State entered the weekend with first place in the SWAC East on the line. The three game set was also the final home games in the careers of four Bulldogs, LaRae Lucero, Debra Borcherding, Alice Young, and Ne'Chell Bowens. Unfortunately, the Delta Devils came to Huntsville and swept all three games, ousting A&M from its first-place perch in the league. MVSU won the doubleheader Saturday 5-3 and 12-3, and then pulled out a nailbiter on Sunday, 2-1 in nine innings.

Game 1 - MVSU opened the game with a home run and then built a commanding lead before an A&M rally.  Trailing 5-1, the Bulldogs mounted a charge in the bottom of the seventh, but left the tying runs on base to end the game. Re'Quincia Mack was 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Bowens also plated a run. Borcherding sufferred the loss.

Game 2 - Alabama A&M grabbed an early lead 1-0 in the first and 3-2 in the third. MVSU scored 10 straight runs over the final innings, including seven unearned runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.  Young and Lucero each had two hits. Young's double gave A&M a 3-2 lead in the third. Krissy Miles took the loss in the circle.

Game 3 - MVSU tacked on the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth as both teams played inspired softball. Borcherding was 4-4 at the plate, but took the pitching loss in a relief appearance. Lucero drove in the only A&M run.
