Two Run Homer Not Enough as MVSU Edges A&M in Second Round Action

Prairie View, Tex. - A&M took an early 4-1 lead after the third inning, but could not sustain the momentum as Mississippi Valley State scored four unanswered runs to capture the 5-4 victory over the Bulldogs in the second round of the SWAC Tournament. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall into the loser's bracket and will face Alcorn State on Sat., April 26 at 10:30 a.m.

AAMU struck first in the top of the opening inning when LaRae Lucero hit a two run bomb to center field to send Re'Quincia Mack home. Wendy Buchholz and Ne'Chell Bowens scored two more runs in the third for the Bulldogs for a 4-0 advantage. Valley answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. However, the Bulldogs were held to just one hit for the duration of the game as the Devilettes rallied to score a run in fourth and fifth, and added two more in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-4 win.

Debra Borcherding suffered the loss - pitching 2.1 innings, fanning five batters and allowing three runs. Valley's Brittany Franklin was awarded the win - pitching four innings and allowing only one hit.

Offensively for the Bulldogs, Lucero led A&M - going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. For Valley, Ta'Niya Wallace was 2-for-3 with a run scored as Shaina Mitchell added a hit and two runs for the Devilettes.

The Bulldogs will face Alcorn at 10:30 a.m. on Sat., Apr. 26 as Valley will play Southern University at 1 p.m. A&M must win its game in order to stay alive in the SWAC Tournament. If they win, they will match up against the loser of the Valley and Southern game at 3:30 p.m.
