BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Deaunte Mason made his first career start at quarterback and completed a 57-yard touchdown on the game's first play from scrimmage to Thomas Harris to help lead Alabama A&M to a 21-7 Magic City Classic victory over Alabama State. Mason finished as the game's Offensive Most Valuable Player, and Afu Okosun led the defensive effort to earn MVP honors as well. The win was the fifth-straight in the Magic City Classic for the Bulldogs.
Mason opened the game with a 57-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Harris on the game's first play. The Hornets tied the game with 5:53 to play in the quarter, but the would be the only points the Bulldog defense would give up on the day.
Alabama A&M took the lead for good on another Mason to Harris hookup, this time from 25 yards with 5:35 to play in the first half. Between the scores, each team missed scoring opportunities as A&M's Jeremy Licea had a field goal blocked, and Bama State hit the crossbar on a 48-yard attempt.
Mason finished the day 21-32 for 273 yards with the two touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 49 yards. Harris caught seven passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns.
Ulysses Banks finished the scoring for A&M on a one-yard plunge and finished with 67 yards rushing on the day. In the process, he set the A&M school rushing record.
Okosun finished the day with eight solo tackles to earn MVP honors defensively.
