Box Score / A&M was outscored 14-4 in the last four minutes to drop a 80-76 decision to Alabama State in Elmore Gym on Saturday. Casey Cantey led A&M with 18 points, including a 10-for-13 mark at the stripe. Cornelius Hester tallied 17 points and five boards in 27 minutes of action. Jabari DeShields recorded 10 points in a season-high of 32 minutes. With the loss, A&M drops to 8-12 on the season and 5-7 in the SWAC. The Bulldogs host Southern on Sat. Feb. 20 beginning at 6 p.m.
The Bulldogs led by as many as 17, 56-39, at the 17:42 mark before the Hornets scored 10 straight in a two-plus minute span to trim the margin to 56-49 with just under 14 minutes remaining in regulation. A&M pushed the spread back to 11, 63-52, off an Amusa dunk, but ASU responded with eight unanswered to cut it to 63-60 at the 6:47 mark. A trey by Cornelius Hester at 4:29 capped a 9-4 Bulldog run. The Hornets took its first advantage, 73-72, since the 17:12 mark of the first half with just over two minutes to play. A&M was unable to regain the advantage for the remainder of the stint, however.
Alabama State won the battle of the boards, 41-29. As a team, the Bulldogs were 24-of-52 from the floor (46.2 percent), while the Hornets shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59).
For ASU, Menji Mundadi scored a game-high 27 points. Byron Walker recorded a triple double with 19 points and 10 boards. A.J. Spencer tallied 10 points - going 3-for-6 from the floor. The win improves the Hornets to 10-13 and 7-5.
