BOSSIER CITY, La. - Alabama A&M completed something no SWAC team has ever accomplished Sunday, winning a SWAC title without a tournament blemish. The Bulldogs completed a 12-0 weekend with a 4-0 sweep of Prairie View A&M in the SWAC Tournament Championship by scores of 180-140, 193-164, 176-160, and 171-168. The second SWAC title in school history (2007 and 2010), A&M had fallen by a single pin in the last two SWAC championship matches. Sophomore Melanie DeCarlo was named tournament most valuable player.
"The back-to-back heartbreaks certainly makes this one very sweet," Alabama A&M head coach Jeff McCorvey said. "The team was relaxed, focused, and confident throughout the tournament and has the best chemistry of any team I have coached at A&M."
DeCarlo led all bowlers with a 204.4 per game average. Addileen Pointer and Jazmine Payne were also named to the all-tournament team.
Alabama A&M earned the #1 seed in the tournament after going 5-0 head-to-head with the other six teams in the tournament during Friday's qualifying round. The Bulldogs defeated Grambling and defending champion Southern 4-0, which earned the Bulldogs their fourth straight trip to the title match.
Sunday's championship match will be broadcast Friday on ESPN-U at 6:30 p.m.
