Bulldogs Set for SWAC Opener

NORMAL – The Alabama A&M men’s basketball team is set for their eleventh Southwestern Athletic Conference opener when the Grambling State University Tigers visit on Tuesday, January 4.

The second scoring offense in the conference (61.9 ppg) and GSU are very familiar with each other as the Bulldogs dominated the Tigers the last time they met on senior night at the end of the 2009-10 season.

Junior Casey Cantey leads the team averaging 10.7 points per contest and is 22 points away from his 1,000th career score. The Demopolis, Alabama native led the team with 14 points versus North Carolina State and has led the team in scoring versus three different opponents this season.

Freshman Demarquelle Tabb has saw action in seven contest averaging 19.4 minutes a game, eight points and a fourth rank in the SWAC 5.9 rebounds per game. He is shooting a team leading 51 percent off of 21-of-45 from the field and leads the league in offensive boards with 19 averaging 2.7 per game.

The Tigers are led by Justin Patton who is averaging 13.5 points per game and Donald Qualls with 8.2 per contest.

Grambling split with the Maroon & White last season claiming a 64-62 decision in Louisiana then the Bulldogs 80-61 win came on March 6, 2010.

The game will be a part of the first athletic events in 2011 for the Maroon & White athletics department. 

The women’s basketball team will meet with the Lady Tigers at 5:30 p.m. while men’s action is set for 7:30 p.m. in Elmore Gymnasium. Tickets are available by calling 256-372-4700.
