NORMAL – The Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs fell 61-43 to the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University, Saturday night for their first Southwestern Athletic Conference loss.
A&M (9-7, 5-1 SWAC) matched basket-for-basket with Alcorn in the first half shooting 11 of 30 for 37 percent from the field and 4 of 5 from the free-throw line. Alcorn provided no answer for the Lady Bulldogs center NaDra Robertson who went into half-time leading all scorers with 10 points off of 4 of 5 shooting.
The second half is where the Maroon & White fell apart. The Altherias Warmley led squad posted season lows with 16 points, 6 of 30 shooting from the field, 1 of 5 from the three-point line and 3 of 10 from the charity stripe. Alcorn on the other hand shot 42% from the field and 81 percent from the free-throw line after not visiting the charity stripe the entire first half.
A&M was out-rebounded 48-37 but it was the 32-21 defensive rebounds advantage and the 42 percent shooting from the field for the game that help the Lady Braves earn their fourth league win.
Kiara Ruffin paced all scorers with 16 points while Robertson led the Lady Bulldogs with 11.
The defeat ends the Maroon & White’s five game win streak in the conference and drops them to 5-1 on the year.
Things just get tougher for the Lady Bulldogs as they host the first place team in the SWAC the Jaguars of Southern University on Monday, January 24 at 5:30 p.m.
