A&M defeats Valley 72-60

BOXSCORE

GREENVILLE
– Junior guard Casey Cantey posted his 1000th career point when he scored 10 versus Mississippi Valley State University in their 72-60 victory over the Devils on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (5-7, 2-1 SWAC) outscored the Devils 32-28 in points in the paint, 19-12 in points off turnovers and 16-14 in second chance points.   The Maroon & White also out did Mississippi Valley in fast break points 10-2 and bench points 37-17.

A&M grabbed the lead at the 19:26 mark in the first half off of a Bo Amusa layup. That lead held throughout much of the first half due to the 20 points put up in the paint by the Bulldogs. The 17 of 34 from the field in the first half was A&M’s best this season.

The hot shooting would continue in the second as Cornelius Hester went 4 for 4 from the field and 2 for 2 from the three-point line to finish with 10 points and 14 for the game. Amusa was sent to the free-throw line 13 times in the second and connected on six of those opportunities. The Grayson, Georgia native pulled in eight rebounds in the final half and completed the game with nine boards and 10 points.

Demopolis native Casey Cantey needed five points entering the game to achieve his 1000th. He now has totaled 1,005 points while attending Alabama A&M. The junior collected five rebounds in A&M’s second conference win in three tries. Freshman Demarquelle Tabb ended the game with eight points and six rebounds. Four of those were offensive boards.

This was head coach Vann Pettaway’s 445th win in his 716th contest at the helm of the Maroon & White in 23 years on “The Hill”.

Mississippi Valley was led by Falando Jones who scored 15 points and Kevin Burwell with 13.
