GREENVILLE – Alabama A&M’s Southwestern Athletic Conference win streak extend to three as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University 60-49, Saturday afternoon at the Washington Convention Center.
Ka’Neshia Smith hit the game's opening basket for the Devilettes only lead of the evening. A&M answered with a 5-0 run and would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. The Lady Bulldogs controlled the contest with their rebounding prowess grabbing 46 boards, 13 of which came on the offensive glass.
The Devilettes had a total of 29 rebounds and was outscored 13-8 in second chance points. Alia Frank and De’Kisha Fondon scored 15 and 11 points in the loss.
Offensively the Devilettes couldn't buy a basket in the second half and that ultimately sealed their fate. The Maroon & White gave up only 27 second half points and more than doubled their opponents scoring in second half. The Lady Bulldogs also made the most of their time at the free-throw line sinking 5 of 9 attempts in the second stanza.
The Lady Bulldogs shot a whopping 50% from the floor (25-50) but was 0-7 from beyond the three-point arc.
Junior guard Whiquitta Tobar along with freshmen Jasmine Sanders and Gabrielle Williams each led the A&M in double figures with 12 points.
The Lady Bulldogs (7-6, 3-0 SWAC) will travel to the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Monday, January 10th. Game time for that match is scheduled for 5 pm.
