Bulldogs Win Seventh Straight

Box Score

LORMAN – The Alabama A&M Bulldogs defeated the Alcorn State University Braves 24-14 to record their seventh straight victory of 2011 on Saturday, November 5 in Lorman, Mississippi.

The Braves open the scoring on their first drive with a nine play 72 yard passing touchdown drive that ended with Alcorn’s Darius Smith 10 yard reception.  The Bulldog defense took it from there.

Senior Rico Porch scooped up an Arnold Walker fumble and scored his first TD of the season to pull the Bulldogs even at seven all.  On the very next possession senior corner Clarence Morris pick off Darius Smith for a 30 yard touchdown to give the Maroon & White a 14-7 lead.

Unfortunately the Bulldog offense could not find their rhythm posting 68 yards on 16 carries and 70 yards passing on 11 of 20 throwing.  Alcorn State’s Anthony Williams’ 54-yard run for the Braves tied it with 3:55 left in the half to pull the Braves even going into half-time.

No one would score again until the fourth quarter when junior quarterback Deaunte Mason’s 1-yard touchdown run capped a 79-yard, 11-play drive at the start of the fourth quarter and put the Bulldogs (7-2, 6-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) ahead to stay.

The Bulldogs got the ball back at its 44 when junior defensive lineman Preston Nelson stopped Arnold Walker of the Braves (2-6, 1-6) for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-1. Alabama A&M then drove 55 yards on eight plays; ending with junior running back Kaderius Lacey scoring from 8 yards out.

The touchdown secured the seventh straight victory for head coach Anthony Jones and the Bulldogs a first since the 2005 season.

Lacey rushed for 158 yards on 26 carries and scored his seventh touchdown of the year.  He also recorded his second straight 100+ yards in a contest and fourth of the season.  Mason went 18 of 34 for 141 yards and a pick.  He rushed for 20 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

Redshirt freshman Montatius Smith lead all receivers with nine catches for 92 yards.

The A&M defense was led by defensive lineman Corey Hart who posted a game high 10 tackles with three sacks and four tackles for loss.  Junior safety Vernon Marshall totaled seven tackles, four solo.  Porch finished with a fumble recovery, his fifth of the season and an interception his fourth of 2011.  Morris ended the game with a tackle and his 30 yard pick six his second interception of the year.

The win versus Alcorn and a Grambling win over Jackson State have given the Bulldogs a good chance of being named the number one team in black college football.  A&M is ranked second in the HSRN and the BoxtoRow coaches’ poll and third in the Sheridan Broadcasting top ten.

The Bulldogs will host Jackson State University on Saturday, November 12 in Louis Crews Stadium in the annual High School Day on “The Hill.”  Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
