BATON ROUGE – The Alabama A&M men’s basketball team earned their second straight victory with a 64-45 decision over the Jaguars of Southern University.
The Bulldogs (12-11, 9-5 SWAC) never trailed in the game and only struggled in the first half. A&M shot eight of 25 for 32% while Southern went 8 for 27 for 30 percent. The Maroon & White was three of 13 for 23 percent from the three-point line during the first half. The Jaguars however went scoreless from the 3-point arc and went into halftime down 23-19.
The Maroon and White opened the second half on fire scoring on their first four possessions. The Bulldogs out-scored SU 13-5 in second chance points, 32-11 in bench points and 10-4 in fast break scores. They would go on to open a 21 point lead and eventually take their ninth victory of the season.
Senior guard Cornelius Hester led all scorers with 24 points, his season high and a high for any player on the team. He also pulled in six rebounds. Junior guard Casey Cantey posted 18 points and five rebounds while freshman forward Jerome Hunter pulled in 11 boards in 19 minutes of action.
Freshman guard Jeremy Crutcher posted a season high 10 assists, while the team set season highs in assists (20) and three pointers (7).
Southern was led by Quinton Doggett with nine points and Julius Ingram with eight.
The Maroon & White’s annual senior night is next up as they host Texas Southern University on Saturday, February 26, at 6 p.m.
