Lady Bulldogs fall to Southern

BOXSCORE

BATON Rouge – Junior guard Whiquitta Tobar matched her season high 31 points but it wasn’t enough as the Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs fell 65-57 to Southern University Monday night. The win gives the Jaguars the season sweep of the Maroon & White.

A&M (12-12, 8-6 SWAC) have lost their last two contest and fallen to the fourth spot in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings after starting the conference season undefeated.

With only two players scoring in double figures the Altherias Warmley led squad struggled in the first half shooting 5 of 22 for 23 percent from the field. However, SU shot 35% from the field and held a 35-21 advantage at halftime. A&M’s only lead in the game was at the 18:01 mark (3-2) off of Danielle O’Neal’s only three-pointer.

The second half is where the Lady Bulldogs started to shine. They shot 41% from the field (14-34) and 67 percent from the charity stripe (6-9). The Maroon & White outscored the Jaguars 16-14 in the paint and 19-6 off of 13 turnovers. Tobar posted a season high 26 points in the second while only four other players scored a combined 10. A&M’s bench also out-scored the Blue and Gold 10-2.

With only four contest remaining on the 2010-11 schedule A&M would need to win at least three of those to remain in the top four of the league. This season the Lady Bulldogs are 3-1 versus their final opponents.

Tobar topped all players with 31 while freshman Brittney Strickland ended with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Jaguars were led by Hannah Kador with 14 points and Laneisha Stephens with 13.

Next up is senior night on “The Hill”. A date with Texas Southern University on Saturday, February 26 at 4 p.m. will serve as the event.
