NORMAL – The Alabama A&M Bulldogs fell 53-50 to their in-state rival the Hornets of Alabama State University on Saturday night.

A&M opened a 26-19 lead at halftime after shooting nine of 22 from the field for 41%.  ASU then opened the second half with an 18-4 run over the first eight minutes to take a 37-30 lead.  From there the Hornets controlled the contest shooting 48 percent on 11-23 shooting.  The Hornets’ biggest lead was nine points and they made five of eight free throws over the final 2:37 to preserve the win.

In a game that saw eight lead changes and four tied scores, the Maroon & White managed to out-score Alabama Sate 15-9 in bench points.  State then outscored A&M 28-18 in points in the paint, 18-5 in points off turnovers and 11-6 in second chance points.  

Tramaine Butler scored 13 points to lead the Hornets while Jeffrey Middlebrooks added 12 for the Hornets (7-10, 4-1 SWAC), who have won five of their past six games.

Alabama State leads the series between the SWAC opponents 22-7 since 2000.

Demarquelle Tabb posted his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs (3-11, 1-4 SWAC), who have lost 10 of their past 11 games.  This was Tabb’s third double double of his career.

Alabama A&M will travel to Baton Rouge, LA on Friday, January 21st, for a 5:00 p.m. date with the Jaguars of Southern University.
