Box Score

Baton Rouge, LA – The Alabama A&M Bulldogs had four different leads versus Southern University but could not hold one of them falling 75-69 to the Jaguars Saturday  night in Baton Rouge, LA.

A&M opened the game on a 7-0 run before Southern went on a run of their own 16-8 taking their first lead 16-15 at the 12:11 mark.  From there neither team built a big lead as they traded baskets until 15 seconds remained in the first, when a Jeremy Crutcher connected on two of his six points to give the Maroon & White a 40-35 lead at the half.

The Bulldogs shot 50 percent on 16 of 32 from the field while the Jaguars shot 13 of 26 for 50%.

The second half did not bode well for the Bulldogs as they shot 25% on six of 24.  What kept A&M in the game was their 8 of 12 from the free throw line in the second half.  Unfortunately that’s what kept SU in the game shooting 73% in the first and 80 percent in the second.

Tied at 61 after regulation, the game went back and forth for the first two minutes of overtime.
Southern (9-11, 5-2 SWAC) trailed 67-66 with 2:22 left before SU’s Jameel Grace hit a three-pointer to put the Jaguars up for good,
69-67, with 1:50 remaining.

SU then went six of eight from the free-throw line in the last 1:25. The Bulldogs (3-12, 1-5 SWAC) turned the ball over twice and went one of two from the field in the final two minutes.

The Jaguars shot 77.4 percent from the free-throw line (24 of 31), including eight of 10 in overtime.

Derrick Beltran added 18 points and Michael Celestin finished with 12 to lead Southern.

The Bulldogs were led by Casey Cantey with 17 points and Demarquelle Tabb with 11 points and 13 rebounds.  This was Tabb’s fourth double double the season and sixth in his colligate career.

Next up the Maroon & White will venture Alcorn, MS to face Alcorn State University in a 7 p.m. matchup on Monday, January 23rd.  Fans can listen to the game “Live” on WJAB 90.9 FM.
