Lady Bulldogs Basketball Victorious in Season Opener

Normal - The Alabama A&M women’s basketball team defeated the Lady Bears of Miles College 62-51, to earn their first victory of the 2012-13 season. Twin sisters Alyssa and Brittney Strickland each led the Lady Bulldogs in double figures, scoring 15 and 12 respectively.
 
Freshman Ebony Johnson led the team in rebounding as she grabbed 11 for a game high.
 
In the first half, the Maroon & White dominated play, outscoring the Lady Bears 33-18. Miles allowed A&M’s defense to get the best of them shooting a first half low 25 percent from the field making seven out of 27 attempts.
 
A&M shot a blistering 42 percent from the field making 12 out of 28 attempts and shooting two for four from behind the arc. The Lady Bulldogs went into intermission with a 15-point cushion.
 
The second half was a different story. Leading by as much as 18, Head Coach Altherias Warmley went to her bench, from there MC slowly chipped into the AAMU lead. The Lady Bears came out with high intensity which added pressure and forced the Maroon and White to turn the ball over more in the second stanza. Key free-throws at the end pulled the Lady Bulldogs to a 62-51 victory.
 
AAMU finished the game dominating the stat sheet with, 30 points in the paint, 23 points off turnovers, 10 second chance points and eight fast break points. A&M also outrebounded Miles 55-42.

This was Warmley's first season opneing victory since the 2006-2007 season.
 
Miles College was led by Courtney English who scored 17 points and pulled in nine rebounds.
 
With a 1-0 start, the Lady Bulldogs return to action on Monday, November 12th as they host the Lady Blazers of UAB for the first time in school history. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. in the T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
