Success at Alabama A&M worth celebrating

The Huntsville Times Original Story

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Alabama A&M has a long and rich history when it comes to sports teams.

Football and basketball have produced its share of stars, but so has women's track and field, men's soccer, men's golf, volleyball and women's basketball and bowling.

The names of those stars and occasions of their triumps are too numerous to mention, but in honor of Black History Month, The Times is going to try to do just that.

Throughout the month, The Times will highlight some of the best Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs who ever ran the ball, caught the ball, kicked the ball, dunked the ball, shot the ball, spiked the ball, hit the ball, bowled a ball or participated in track and field events. We'll highlight some of the milestone achievements in the program's history. We will also highlight other individuals, coaches and administrators who have impacted A&M's sports history. We hope our readers will enjoy these snippets of information.

A&M has fielded at least one varsity sport since the early 1900s. Since that time, the Bulldogs have won six national championships, had three runner-up finishes, advanced to the NCAA Tournament on a number of occasions and won a number of conference championships.

The men's soccer program, under former coach Salah Yousif, brought national acclaim to A&M in the late 1970s by winning NCAA Division II national championships in 1977 and 1979. The Bulldogs were national runners-up in 1978 and 1981.

The women's track and field program won four NCAA Division II national championships (three outdoor and one indoor) under former coach Joe Henderson.

The women's bowling team, under current coach Jeff McCorvey, was the national runners-up at the NCAA Division I National Championships in 2006.

The men's basketball team has made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to the Division II Elite Eight four times.

The volleyball team, under former coach Betty Austin and current coach Nedra Brown, has made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, while the men's golf team has made four appearances in the national tournament, including three NCAA Tournament appearances.

As an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, A&M enjoyed great success.

The Bulldogs won 65 conference championships in a variety of sports.

A&M left the SIAC and NCAA Division II and moved to the Division I level and joined the SWAC in 1999. In their short time in the SWAC, the Bulldogs have won 17 conference championships and more are on the horizon.

You can bet The Times will be there to chronicle those successful teams, coaches and athletes, too.
