Warmley and company falls to Southern 76-63

NORMAL -- The Alabama A&M women's basketball team fell 76-63 to Southern University women's squad Monday night.

The Lady Bulldogs fell behind early as the Jaguar women’s basketball team got off to a quick start, opening up a five-point lead. Despite being behind, the Maroon & White stuck with it. Quickly closing the gap and gaining a one-point lead, 11-10 at the 14:10 mark of the first half.
 
The teams traded baskets for the next seven minutes when Southern was able to regain the lead at 23-20 with 7:30 remaining. At this point, the Jaguars were assessed a flagrant foul after an elbow from Lechell Rush made contact with A&M’s Brittany Strickland. Danielle Oneal of Jackson, Mississippi sank the two free throws to retie the game at 23.
 
Fast paced back and forth action summed up the first half, as neither team could separate themselves offensively for the other.  After eight tied scores and 10 lead changes, SU took a two-point lead into the half-time break, 35-33.
 
Jasmine Sanders lead all scorers with 20 points, followed by Southern’s Adrian Sanders with 14.
 
Southern was more aggressive coming out of the break, as they went on a 6-12 run to open up an eight-point lead at 47-39. Despite A&M’s numerous efforts to close the gap, SU was able to maintain an eight to ten point lead for the next 12 minutes.  With seven minutes remaining, and an eight-point lead 58-50, SU committed a foul that sent Sanders to the line to shoot a one-and-one.
 
The last five minutes of the game were the most intense as A&M tried to recover from their deficit. The Lady Bulldogs picked up their defensive efforts. Nonetheless, the Maroon & White would not close the gap, and went on to lose 76-63 for only the second time this season.
 
Leading the Lady Bulldogs was Jasmine Sanders who scored a career high 32 points.  The Chester, South Carolina native also pulled in 10 rebounds to record her second double double this season and third in her career.  Shundray Davis was the only other Maroon & White player with double digit scoring posting 14 points.  Senior Clairissa Moore pulled in 13 boards to lead all players.
 
A&M will be back in action Saturday, January 26th when they take on Texas Southern University at 3 P.M. in Houston, Texas.
