Lady Bulldogs Defeat JSU, 66-48

Box Score

Normal- The Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Tigers of Jackson State University despite getting off to a slow start Friday night in Elmore gymnasium.

After winning possession on the opening tip, a Jasmine Sanders’ shot was lodged in between the rim and the backboard to kick off the game. To the delight of the crowd, junior Clairissa Moore came to the rescue, by running off the bench to jump up and free the ball with her hand.

Following made baskets by sophomore Taylor Sippial, and senior Na’Dra Robinson, the Maroon & White settled down and increased their offensive efficiency. A&M went on a 13-2 run to develop a 15-2 lead at the 12:01 mark in the first half. A made free throw by JSU’s Alisa Ross broke the Lady Bulldogs run, however the Lady Tigers could not come up with enough to close the lead prior to the half-time whistle.

After twice opening up a comfortably 22 point lead, the team took a 37-23 advantage into the break. Sanders led all first half scorers, netting 10 points as well as pocketing four rebounds (three offensive, one defensive).

In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs continued where they left off. Opening the second 20 minutes with a 6-2 run which forced JSU to call a timeout. It looked as if the JSU players may have been calling it quits, until they took the time to regroup. As A&M began to relax, the Lady Tigers slowly tried to chip away at the lead.

Tensions raised as the Lady Tigers forced numerous A&M turnovers with their increased defensive pressure. Brittney Strickland split on two attempts at the line, after a technical foul was called on JSU’s Ekwara Ndongo.

The increased energy lit a fire in the hearts of the Maroon& White as they went on to gain their largest lead of the night, (27 points at 63-37). After a final push by Jackson State, A&M improved to 2-0 in SWAC play defeating the Lady Tigers by a final score of 66-48.

Ten Lady Bulldogs contributed points on the night, with Jasmine Sanders finishing with a game high 14 points.
