Women's Basketball opens at Home

NORMAL -- First-year head coach Semeka Randall and the Alabama A&M women's basketball team will tip off the 2013-14 season with a contest at home against Southeast Missouri State Friday, November 8. Opening tip with the Redhawks is set for 7 p.m.

AAMU returns 11 letter winners, including three starters off last season's 9-20 squad. The starters are Jasmine Sanders, Alyssa Strickland and Ebony Johnson. Juniors Brittany Strickland and Taylor Sippal also return, having a combined 12 starts between them last year. Three sophomores that saw significant action in their first year include Shabr'an  Richardson, Sommer Harper and Christyn Hooper.

Sanders scored a game-high 16 points, and Shabr'an Richardson added 11 and seven rebounds as Alabama A&M held off the Lady Hornets of Concordia College, 82-50, in an exhibition contest at the T.M. Elmore Gymnasium on Monday night.

It was A&M's only exhibition game of the pre-season in preparation for their season opener against Southeast Missouri.
Randall was named head coach in May. The former Tennessee All-American has been an assistant at Cleveland State, Michigan State and West Virginia and head coach at Ohio University before coming to Normal.

The Maroon and White were picked to ninth in the SWAC in the preseason poll released by the conference.

Southeast Missouri State seniors Jordan Hunter and Patricia Mack both flashed all-conference ability a year ago. Mack is the top returning rebounder in the Ohio Valley Conference. She averaged 9.3 rebounds per game and led the Redhawks in rebounding in 21 of their 29 games while posting three double-doubles. Hunter averaged 9.1 points per game, the highest among returners, and scored in double figures 13 times. She finished seventh in the OVC with 115 assists

Admission to Monday's contest is $15.00 for reserved and $10.00 for general admission.
