Women's Basketball falls in Season Opener 76-64

NORMAL -- Senior Jasmine Sanders started the season off where she left off with 15 points and 14 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Alabama A&M women's basketball team fell 76-64 in their season opener at home vs. Southeast Missouri State.

Sanders' was one of four A&M players to score double digit figures against the Redhawks. Twin sisters, Alyssa and Brittney Strickland added 12 and 10 points respectively, while junior Taylor Sippal contributed 10 points and three boards.

Sanders shot 50 percent from the field and converted on five of six of her free-throw attempts. She also grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked a pair of shots in 23 minutes of action.

Both teams struggled in the first half with getting points on the board consistently until the Redhawks took the lead away from the Lady Bulldogs with 10:33 left, at 24-23, after a jump shot by Olivia Hackman.

SEMO put the game away in the first 10 minutes of the second half, extending its lead to 14 points on a three pointer by Jordan Hunter. Hunter led all scorers with 18 points on the evening.

Overall, A&M shot 53 percent from the field, and scored 18 points off SEMO's 14 turnovers. The Maroon and White finished the game with 40 rebounds compared to Southeast Missouri's 36.

Up Next A&M will travel to Richmond, Kentucky to face the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. on November, 14, 2013.
