Alabama A&M University Department of Athletics held its annual Bulldog Espy Awards last Thursday night in the beautiful East Hall of the Von Braun Civic and Convention Center in downtown Huntsville. This year's event had over 300 attendees.

The Espy Awards is the premier event of Bulldog Athletics.  The fabulous Erica Fox and Ted Dixie hosted the “red carpet” event this year and provided wonderful comedic energy for the audience.  The event resembled a Grammy Awards show with red carpet interviews, gorgeous gowns and tuxedos, paparazzi, spotlights, a delicious meal, and great music.

A few of the highlights of the night were the presentations of the Betty K. Austin Female Student-Athlete of the Year to Women's Soccer player Adrienne Wiggins and the Vann Pettaway Male Student-Athlete of the Year to Jose Long, Basketball.   Both Coach Austin and Coach Pettaway were in attendance and gave words of encouragement and motivation to the student-athletes.  The all-sports highlight video showcased Bulldog athletes on the gridiron, on the courts, on the fields, and on the track.  Track athletes, Shaquina Phalo and SWAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Representative, Marion Malone were the night's big winners as they took home five awards each.  Volleyball player and President of the SWAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Ashley Forman, also had an impressive night.   She was the female winner of the Total Package Award, which is given to student-athletes who excel in academics, athletics, community service, positive image, and leadership.

Director of Athletics, Bryan Hicks, expressed his appreciation to the student-athletes, the coaches, the athletic staff, and all attendees for making the event so special.  Board of Trustee members Marjorie Battle and Lucien Blankenship were also in attendance and were very pleased with the overall event.

The Bulldog Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is charged with planning the event each year and wanted to take it to another level.

“Tonight was really great.  I think everyone enjoyed themselves,” said Women's Basketball player and SAAC President, Nadra Robertson.

SAAC plans to make next year's event even better and rival any awards show from the Oscars to the Grammys.
