South Carolina State blanks A&M 32-0

Box Score

NORMAL – The Alabama A&M Bulldogs could not find any scoring as the fast paced Bulldogs of South Carolina State blanked them 32-0 Saturday night in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

"When you play a young team you never know how they are going to play," said head coach Anthony Jones.  "In the same regard we can't keep using we are young three games into the season, we have to grow up."

The Bulldogs used three different quarterbacks in hopes of putting points on the board.  Starting QB Brandon Wells threw two interceptions and was sacked three times before being replaced by the strong arm Jaymasion (Jam-ma-son) Lee.  Lee played most of the time finishing his first division one contest 13 of 34 for 187 yards and a pick.  California native Chris Leachmen connected one time with a receiver after three attempts.

Barrington Scott led the team in rushing with 40 yards on 16 carries, his second straight game with that number of rushes. Scott also caught three passes for 45 yards with a long of 31. Junior Montaurius Smith led all receivers with five receptions for 77 yards.

A&M did have a record tying player as Robert Nelson tied Johnnie Baldwin and Lionel Macklin with 17 tackles in a game.

"It's a great accomplishment but we lost the game so it doesn't feel as good as it should," said Nelson. "I tried to fly around and make as many plays as I could.  The defense did well as a whole, everybody worked hard."

For the third straight game Rashad Anderson collected over 200 yards punting posting 292 on eight carries averaging 36.5.  His longest was 55 yards with two landing inside the 20 yard line.  Corey Johnson also totaled a career high with 10 tackles.

Only two of the Maroon & Whites drives went double digit plays.  Lee's drive right before halftime was ended on a Scott fumble.  The second double digit drive ended when the Bulldogs went for it on fourth and goal and was stopped short.

SCSU was fast from beginning to end never huddling, lining up and running plays as soon as the previous one ended. The South Carolina State Bulldogs scored 13 points in the first quarter, seven in the second and 12 in the third to claim their first victory in 2013.
SCSU's Richard Cue went 9 for 19 for 147 yards and a touchdown.  Eight different players ran the ball for the Bulldogs totaling 238 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.  Their leader was Dondre Brown who secured 64 yards on 12 carries.  Nick Belcher posted nine points with his foot going 3 of 4 on field goals.

This is the second straight contest A&M has been held under 200 passing yards and under 100 yards rushing.

"We traveled more players and played a few but it didn't help us today," Jones mentioned.  "We cranked things up in practice this week in order to mimic what we were going to see."

"We will go back to practice next week and get things cleaned up and get ready for our conference play"

Although the Maroon & White have only scored seven points in the last two games they are still 1-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.  That part of the schedule begins next Saturday, September 21st when they travel to Houston, Texas to face the Prairie View A&M Panthers.
