Bulldogs Head To The Bayou

NORMAL - The Alabama A&M Bulldogs' basketball teams will battle the Jaguars of Southern University on Saturday, Jan. 25, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Last year against SU, Jasmine Sanders and Alyssa Strickland combined for 21 second half points to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 64-47 win over Southern University. A&M outscored the SU women's basketball team 22-18 in points in the paint, 13-3 in second chance points, and 24-12 in bench points. AAMU outrebounded Southern 39-31 but committed 17 turnovers compared to SU's 10.
 
Recently A&M women's basketball team took a tough 92-45 loss Saturday afternoon at the hands of Alabama State. The first period saw Strickland lead all first half scorers with 15, while freshman Alasha Foster led A&M on the boards with four. The Bulldogs grabbed three steals, forced four turnovers, and were a perfect 7-7 from the charity strip in the first 20-minute period.
 
The Maroon and White are now 3-12 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Jasmine Sanders is averaging 11.2 points and 6.8 rebounds a game while Brittany Strickland holds a 16.9 points per game average and has scored double digit points in the last six games including 23 and 22 in their last two contests.

Southern (9-5, 6-0 SWAC) is led by Kendra Coleman who is averaging 18.6 points and 3.4 rebounds a contest.
 
On the men's side the last time the teams met the Jaguars, outshot AAMU 48 percent (26 of 54) to 42 percent (24 of 57). The Jaguars struggled from the stripe, 22 of 32 compared to 12 of 17 for Bulldogs, but registered a 14 to 4 assist-to-turnover ratio compared to A&M's 15 to 10.

Demarquelle Tabb led the Bulldogs with 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting but the other four Bulldog starters shot a combined 13 of 34. Nicholas West scored a season high 13 points in 26 minutes of action. Jeremy Crutcher scored 11 points and dished out eight assists.  Brandon Ellis finished the game with 11 points and five boards.

The Jaguars (9-10, 5-1 SWAC) have been led by Calvin Godfrey with 13.3 points and Tre Lynch with 10.4 points a contest.
