Bulldogs show pride in loss to Auburn

Story Links

AUBURN, Ala. -- It's the old adage - the score isn't indicative of the game.

In Auburn, while the Bulldogs fell to the No.15-ranked Tigers 55-0 on Saturday night, they didn't give up.

Auburn, as expected, dominated the statistics but not the heart and spirit.

"We got beat by a better team. I know that," said Alabama A&M Head Coach James Spady. "I can tell you this though -- I'm extremely proud."

Auburn scored on its first two possessions to take a 14-0. The first touchdown was a game-opening, eight-play, 65-yard drive. The second touchdown was set up by an interception at the A&M 22 yard line.

But, the Tigers didn't score again until there were less than four minutes left in the half.

"It felt like we held up a little bit early in the game defensively," Spady said.

A&M, though its running game was held to 27 yards, had a couple of chances to score.

A 37-yard field goal attempt by Nick Carden was blocked with 23 seconds left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs were moving in the third quarter when quarterback De'Angelo Ballard was intercepted at the Auburn 37.

Other than that, the Bulldogs were never really able to get untracked on offense - due in large part to the Auburn defense.

"We got beat by a better team. I know that," Spady said. "We just couldn't bring our offense to the party. I think Auburn's defense was a little bit too strong for us."

The A&M defense came through with a stop on a fourth-and-two for Auburn and recovered an Auburn fumble.

"We had some guys that really had some good performances on defense," Spady said. "In the secondary,  Devonte Simon. He went down with a shoulder injury, but before that, he was making some plays (game-high 15 tackles). I think Kenneth Davis made quite a few tackles (8). Averee Giles, a defensive lineman, is always involved in anything we do well on defense. He's always involved."

Spady said he was proud that, in spite of the crowd and playing in Jordan-Hare Stadium, the Bulldogs didn't back down.

"We don't play in front of 80,000 people every week. We don't play in this kind of arena every week," Spady said. "For our kids to come out here and not be intimidated by the stage, I'm proud of that."
