Bulldogs beat UNA with 12-hit attack

HUNTSVILLE -- Cornelius Woods' eighth-inning double drove in Ryan Thrasher with the eventual winning run Wednesday in a 6-5 win over the University  of North Alabama.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for A&M. The Bulldogs host Jackson State this weekend in a three-game series.

Woods' hit came with one out in the inning after Cole Thiede and Thrasher hit back-to-back singles. Thiede's hit scored Eric Yarbrough to break a 4-4 tie. Thrasher advanced to second on the play.

The Lions opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. But the Bulldogs answered on Tanner Ivey's ground out to first that scored J.T. O'Reel, who scored on an error on the play.

UNA (15-10) took a 2-1 lead in the second inning before A&M (6-17) used a four-hit third inning to take the lead.

E.J. Watson opened with a double and scored on O'Reel's single to center. Carlton Peppers followed with a single, moving O'Reel to second. He then scored on Dylan Payne's single to right field for a 3-2 A&M lead.

UNA tied the score in the fifth but Thiede drove in Tanner Ivey in the bottom of the sixth to regain the led at 4-3.

A solo home run by UNA's Kyle Hubbock in the eighth inning tied the score again, leading to the Bulldogs' rally in the bottom of the eighth.

Brandon Marsonek got the win in two innings of relief pitching. Starting pitcher Caleb Roberts scattered eight hits in his seven-inning stint. Roberts had six strikeouts and walked just one.

O'Reel finished with a pair of hits, one RBI and two runs scored. Payne, Thrasher and Woods each also had two hits and Thiede had two RBIs.
