Bulldogs eliminated by Jackson State

NEW ORLEANS -- The Bulldogs' season came to an end Thursday morning at the hands - and bats - of Jackson State.

A&M carried a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning when the Tigers scored five runs for a 6-3 advantage. JSU tacked on two more in the sixth and wrapped it up with a seven-run seventh inning in a 15-3 win.

The loss eliminated the Bulldogs from the SWAC tournament in New Orleans. Jackson State advanced in the elimination bracket to face the loser of Thursday afternoon's Texas Southern - Arkansas-Pine Bluff game.

The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead when Nolan Ramsey and Cornelius Woods hit back-to-back singles to open their half of the second inning. One out later, Dylan Payne singled to load the bases.

Darren White's sacrifice fly to right field brought home Woods with the tying run. Then, Eric Yarbrough's infield single scored Saige Benson, who had earlier reached base on a fielder's choice, for the 2-1 lead.

Ramsey and Woods teamed up in the third inning for a run and a 3-1 lead. Ramsey ripped a two-out double down the leftfield line - his 17th double of the season. Woods followed with a single up the middle to score Ramsey.

In the meantime, starting pitcher Josh Burchell had given up just one run on four hits through the first four innings. But in the fifth inning, he was plagued by a pair of walks, a hit batter and five hits as JSU took the lead for good.

Ramsey, Woods and Yarbrough each had two hits for the Bulldogs, who finish the year 13-44.
