Gameday: Southern U visits The Hill

HUNTSVILLE -- One of the most explosive players in college football will be in action today when Southern University visits Louis Crews Stadium.

The Bulldogs are hosting Southern in a key Southwestern Athletic Conference game this evening. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

Southern's Willie Quinn brings his electrifying play to The Hill and A&M Head Coach James Spady said he is the key to the Jags' success.

Last Saturday, Quinn scored three touchdown catches, returned a punt 78 yards for another score and, to top off the day, even threw a 30-yard TD pass in Southern's 64-6 rout of Alabama State.

"We've got to try to keep the ball out of his hands," Spady said. "I nominated him last year for All-American."

The Jags also have the league's leading rusher in Lenard Tillery who is averaging 108 yards per game. A key to Southern's win last week were the six turnovers (3 fumbles lost, 3 interceptions) by Alabama State.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have the No. 2 rusher in Jordan Bentley at 78.7 yards per game while Kenneth Davis is fifth in the league with 25 tackles this season.

Self-inflicted mistakes were a contributor to A&M's loss to Prairie View A&M last week. Spady said the Bulldogs have to improve on that showing.

The Bulldogs were among the best in the nation in penalties and penalty yards. But last week, they were out of character, Spady said.

"We were doing the things we hadn't been doing up to this point," he said. "We had nine penalties, we haven't had nine penalties combined in the prior two games.

"And, it was the kind of penalties - it was the things that stopped drives, or extended drives for them ... You can't rough a quarterback after getting them off the field on a third and long and then try and win the game if you're doing a bunch of those things .."
