Volleyball Wins Home Opener 3-1 over Jackson State

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- The Alabama A&M volleyball team earned its third straight win with a 3-1 victory over visiting Jackson State in the Lady Bulldogs' home-opener Friday evening.

"The first home game win is always nice," said Head Coach Rose Powell. "We have worked hard on getting more players involved in our offense and tonight, Terra Brooks added nine kills, four digs and two blocks while Courtney Oliver added five blocks and three kills."

AAMU had 128 kill attempts compared to Jackson State's 137 attempts in the four-set match. The Lady Bulldogs recorded a .195 hitting percentage on 44 kills compared to the Tigers' .137 hitting percentage on 50 kills.

The opening set of the match was a back and forth affair with the lead changing hands ten times. With the Tigers leading 16-15, the Lady Bulldogs responded with three straight points, culminating with a kill from Oliver. Both teams continued to trade points and tied at 23, a JSU serving error and kill by Ashundria McNeal allowed A&M to close the set 25-23.

The Tigers got off to a good start in the second set, taking an early 9-1 lead. The Lady Bulldogs responded with a 14-6 run midway through to tie the game at 15. After two points from JSU, the Lady Bulldogs answered with six straight points to gain a 21-17 lead. The Lady Bulldogs would not surrender the lead as a JSU attack error provided the final point of the 25-22 victory.

The third set would go much the same as the first set with the teams trading points throughout the match. A&M gained a 20-18 lead halfway through the set, but the Tigers went on a 7-2 run and A&M dropped the set 22-25.

The Lady Bulldogs got back on track in the fourth set, taking an early 12-7 lead. AAMU maintained the lead the entire set.  JSU battled back and cut the lead to four. However, a kill by Riley Balsmeyer allowed A&M to secure the 3-1 match victory.

McNeal paced the Lady Bulldogs attack with 19 kills while also providing 12 digs and five total blocks. Brooks added three aces and Oliver contributed five blocks to go along with her seven kills. Balsmeyer added 40 assists, eight digs and three kills, while Rebecca Pierce led A&M with 13 digs.

The Lady Bulldogs next game will be played on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the AAMU Student and Health Wellness Center against Mississippi Valley State University at 4 p.m.
