Bulldogs drop football opener to MTSU

Box Score MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Despite the lopsided score in Saturday's loss at Middle Tennessee State, Bulldogs Head Coach James Spady found some positives with his squad.

"We had just one turnover and only six penalties," he said after A&M's 55-0 loss. "That's very good."

It may not seem like much after the opener, but to be successful in the Southwestern Athletic Conference this season, the Bulldogs have to hold onto the ball and don't create "unforced errors," as Spady likes to term penalties.

And against a Middle Tennessee State team that has been bowl eligible seven times in the last 10 seasons, the Bulldogs didn't make the "unforced error."

Offensively, Byran Brower had 40 yards on four carries and Jordan Bentley also had 40 yards rushing but on 12 carries.

On the flip side, the defense came up with a pair of interceptions (Mike Mills and Devonte Simon) against one of the top passing teams in the nation.

The Bulldogs, led by Tere Calloway's 12 total tackles, also blanked MTSU in the third quarter and held the Blue Raiders to 10 points in the second half.

Now, the Bulldogs turn their attention to Mississippi Valley State in the SWAC opener for both teams. The game is next Saturday in Itta Bena, Miss., with kickoff at 4 p.m.
